Matthew Edmund Butler, 23, of Hayesville passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 in an Atlanta, GA hospital. He was a native of Marietta, GA. Matthew graduated with the Class of 2008 from Hayesville High School. He was a 2012 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a double major in political science and history. Matthew was the recipient of many scholastic scholarships. He was a member of the Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was very active with the community churches and the Hinton Rural Life Center.

He was the son of Steve and Maggie Butler of Hayesville.

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Butler and Meredith Ann Butler both of Hayesville.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Hayesville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating. Interment was in Ledford’s Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Adam and Derek Butler, John Michael Guthrie, and Joe, Jack, and Will McCreary.

The family received friends from 2-3:45 Thursday afternoon at The Gathering Place at Hayesville First United Methodist Church prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Matthew Edmund Butler to the Hinton Rural Life Center, PO Box 27, Hayesville, NC 28904.
