Matthew Edmund Butler, 23, of Hayesville passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 in an Atlanta, GA hospital. He was a native of Marietta, GA. Matthew graduated with the Class of 2008 from Hayesville High School. He was a 2012 graduate of UNC Chapel Hill with a double major in political science and history. Matthew was the recipient of many scholastic scholarships. He was a member of the Ledford’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was very active with the community churches and the Hinton Rural Life Center.


He was the son of Steve and Maggie Butler of Hayesville.


Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Butler and Meredith Ann Butler both of Hayesville.


Funeral services were held at 4:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2012 at Hayesville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Sellers officiating. Interment was in Ledford’s Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers were Adam and Derek Butler, John Michael Guthrie, and Joe, Jack, and Will McCreary.


The family received friends from 2-3:45 Thursday afternoon at The Gathering Place at Hayesville First United Methodist Church prior to the services.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Matthew Edmund Butler to the Hinton Rural Life Center, PO Box 27, Hayesville, NC 28904.

He was a good friend to me, I know that this is late to reply on this but i had just found out by my parents... He was a big brother to me, he always helped me out at the hinton center... I will always remember him... Love you matt butler.

The entire famil is in my prayers during this difficult time. Matthew's smile was contagious and his heart for people was something that will be missed by so many. Know that he touched so many lives in such a positive way and you are being lifted up in prayer to God....the Comforter!

Matt was in my Intervaristy small group his freshman year at UNC. His insight always made a tremendous impact and his sense of humor and wit always brought everyone laughter. Matt was a wonderful man and an excellent role model. He will be greatly missed. I extend my prayers and deepest sympathies to your family.

Dear Butlers, I was incredibly sad to learn of Matt's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Matt has been my inspiration for many years now. I am so incredibly sad, yet grateful that I was able to know Matt, for I think he made me a better person and made me want to be a better doctor. If you are ever in the area, I would love to give you a hug.
