Margaret Johnson Cantrell, 91, of Brasstown died Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at her residence. She was a native of Cherokee County, but had lived in Clay County most of her life. For 26 years, she was owner and operator of Margaret’s Beauty Shop in Murphy. Margaret was a homemaker. She was a member of the Murphy First United Methodist Church. Margaret was a loving mother and friend to all. She loved to cook for anyone who came by the house.
She was the daughter of the late V.M. and Julia Howell Johnson and she was preceded in death by a loving step-mother, Mae Keener Johnson. She was the wife of the late John Edward Cantrell, who died October 6, 2000. Her great granddaughter, Airanne McGrath, her sister, Louise Hammock, and her son-in-law, Hugh Ellison, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Payne and husband, Vic of Brasstown, and Judy Ellison of Lawrenceville, GA; two sons, Ed Cantrell and wife, Sheila of Hayesville, and Melvin Cantrell and wife, Kathy of Brasstown; a brother, McKinley Johnson and wife, Muriel of Berlin, NJ; and ten grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 5 in the Chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with the Rev. Dallas Crowder officiating. Interment was in Hickory Stand United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dwayne Cantrell, Clay Logan, Michael Robinson, Vic Davis, Phillip Rickett, and Robbie McGrath.
The family received friends from 6-8 Friday evening at the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville.
